Finding a good mechanic can be daunting. You don’t want to go to one that doesn’t do the repairs right. Or go to one that does more work than necessary on your car. You want to find and honest mechanic that won’t take advantage of you. But how do you do this? How can you be sure the mechanic you choose isn’t going to take you for a ride?
Start by asking around to people you know. A referral is one of the best ways to find a mechanic you can trust. Ask your friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers who they use. Ask them if they are happy with the mechanic they used last. What was their experience. They can not only steer you in the direction of quality auto repair services, but they can steer you away from a bad mechanic.
Check out online review sites like Yelp. Yelp is free and it connects people with great businesses. It even has auto repair reviews. The site is free to use and it even has a mobile application you can download. You can read real reviews, posted by real people. It is a great way to shift the odds in your favor when you are trying to find a good mechanic.
You can also check out reviews on sites like Angie’s List. They don’t have as many reviews as Yelp, but they do have reviews on there. You have to have membership to post a review on Angie’s List. This means the people that post reviews on there are serious.
Check with consumer protection groups like the Better Business Bureau. Before you drop your car off to be fixed at a mechanic check it with groups like this. If they have a good rating with the BBB that means that they don’t have many complaints, or they responded to complaints in a positive way.
Finally, do a Google search of the mechanic you are considering. You never know what you might find online. If you don’t find anything negative, chances are good you are dealing with a good mechanic. You can also do a Google search with your zip code to find mechanics in your area. That doesn’t mean they will be good, you will still have to do your homework, but it is a starting point.
